Title :

Gondwana butterflies: the Africa-South America connection

Abstract :

The Mesozoic history of Africa and other Gondwanan landmasses is briefly related, as is the early history of Lepidoptera.  The meagre fossil record of the latter is compared with the better documented vertebrate record.  Sister-group analysis suggests a Gondwanan genesis for butterflies, and illustrations are given of contemporary genera. Pantropical genera are discussed, and Borbo and Panoquina are suggested as possible synonyms.
